Mamelodi Sundowns And City To Fight For Final Champions League Spot!

Mamelodi Sundowns will be faced with one last fight in the Absa Premiership before the end of the 2016/17 season, as their rivals Cape Town City continue to put the Brazilians under pressure.
Sundowns missed out on taking the league title fight right down to the wire, as they secured just one point in their penultimate fixture, which consequently saw Bidvest Wits being crowned Absa Premiership champions after the Clever Boys’ 2-0 win over Polokwane City.
However, Masandawana can’t afford to rest just yet, as the fight for second place on the Absa Premiership league standings will drag on until the very last match-day on May, 27.
The team who finishes in second place in the Absa Premiership will make their way into the CAF Champions League next season and Sundowns will have a fight on their hands to safely secure their place in the prestigious competition. Wits' league title win secured the Braamfontein-based club automatic qualification in the CAF Champions League next season.
Masandawana are currently in second place on the log, however, there is just one point separating the Chloorkop-based club (56) from Head Coach Eric Tinkler’s side (55).
City have comfortably claimed the third placed spot as theirs, which means that the Mother City-based club will be participating in the CAF Confederations Cup next season, an outstanding achievement for the club after their inaugural campaign.
However, there is still a chance that City could finish the campaign in second place and make their way into the Champions League next season.
If Sundowns draw or suffer defeat to relegation-threatened Highlands Park on Saturday, May 27 and Head Coach Tinkler’s side claim maximum points in their encounter against Polokwane on the same day, the Mother City-based club will finish off the 2016/17 campaign in second place on 58-points, while Sundowns go one lower to third place and will have to settle for the CAF Confederation Cup competition.
However, a win for Head Coach Pitso Mosimane’s side will seal their fate in the CAF Champions League next season.
